Function of the junction
Intermediate support = a structural column in the middle of the hall, where a horizontal panel runs continuously past the column into the next bay. The key difference vs. end support (p. 33):
- The panel does not terminate at the column — it continues further.
- No mineral wool in a 20 mm gap (because there is no gap — the panel sits directly against the column).
- OB-17 is fixed on one side only to the panel (the other end overhangs in front of the column); its function is cosmetic — to cover the fastener head.
Continuous junction without expansion joint = the panel accommodates thermal movement along its length; only large halls (>60 m) require structural expansion joints (p. 35).
Critical installation aspects
- Fixing to the intermediate column — self-drilling fastener through the panel into the column; spacing every 60-80 cm along the column.
- No mineral wool in the joint — the panel acts simultaneously as thermal insulation and as a cover for the column.
- Thermal bridge at the fastener through the steel column — minimal (typically 0.01 W/K per fastener), acceptable for standard warehouse halls.
- OB-17 is often omitted in halls with low aesthetic requirements — the fastener head is visible but covered with an EPDM cap.
