Function of the junction
RC support = a load-bearing column made of concrete instead of the typical steel one. It is used in:
- Industrial halls requiring the fire resistance of reinforced concrete (REI 60–180).
- Halls with high horizontal loads — e.g. underslung cranes, pressure from stored materials.
- Hybrid halls — steel framing + reinforced concrete load-bearing columns (mixed construction).
Vs. a steel support: different fasteners — special concrete anchors (item 06) instead of the typical self-drilling fasteners for steel.
Critical installation aspects
- Concrete anchors (item 06) — chemical (Hilti HVU, Fischer FIS) or mechanical (Hilti HSL, Fischer FAZ); minimum concrete class C20/25 is required.
- Drilling holes in the reinforced concrete — check that the drill does not hit the rebar (rebar scanner or the structural engineer’s reinforcement plan).
- Mineral wool (item 05) in the 20 mm gap between panel and column — critical, as concrete has λ ≈ 1.7 W/m·K and forms a strong thermal bridge.
- OB-17 cover flashing fixed with concrete screws + rivets to the panel; do NOT connect rigidly — concrete and panel respond differently to thermal movement.
- Anchor pull-out test — in halls with high requirements (e.g. cranes), pull-out testing of 3 sample anchors with a force ramp is required.
