When to use this system
termPIR® AGRO AL boards are used in cold rooms where sandwich panels are not economically justified or feasible:
- Small cold chambers (up to 200 m²) — sandwich panels carry high fixed costs (cutting, transport, corner pieces, doors). Boards cut to size are cheaper.
- Refurbishment of existing cold rooms — when the masonry structure is to be kept and insulation is added internally on a framing system.
- Non-standard geometries — curves, slopes, low headroom — where 1000/1140 mm panels do not fit dimensionally.
- Ripening and fermentation chambers — in catering and food processing, where self-supporting walls are not required.
- Livestock facilities — farm dairies, egg-cooling chambers — where the ammonia environment requires a dedicated Al foil (AGRO AL).
AGRO AL foil characteristics
termPIR® AGRO AL features a 50 µm washable, gas-tight aluminium foil (AGRO type):
- Resistance to ammonia and pressure washing — essential for food-industry facilities cleaned regularly.
- Gas-tight foil — eliminates water vapour ingress into the core (critical for freezers, where condensation inside the insulation causes cracking during freeze cycles).
- CEIL variant — termPIR® AGRO AL CEIL provides additional B-s2,d0 classification in end-use ceiling applications (mandatory for livestock and industrial buildings).
Installation requirements
- Load-bearing framing — required, as PIR is not self-supporting like a sandwich panel. Galvanised steel profiles (e.g. CD/UD plasterboard profiles) or timber framing.
- Bonding to substrate — PU adhesive or mechanical fixing through the PIR board + vapour barrier on the warm side.
- Joint sealing — aluminium tape (gas-tight) on all joints. This is critical — a cold room with even isolated leaks will lose cooling capacity and condense water.
- Internal finish — the chamber side must be lined with HACCP-compliant sheet metal or laminated panel (the AGRO foil itself is not a service surface — it needs protection).
- Cold-room floor — termPIR® AGRO P-REV under the screed (variant with aluminium turned towards the core, resistant to screed alkalis).
Comparison with sandwich panel system (insPIRe® CH)
| Aspect | termPIR® AGRO AL on framing | insPIRe® CH (sandwich panel) |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | requires support framing | self-supporting |
| Finish | requires internal lining | ready (factory PE lacquer) |
| Construction speed | slower (2 stages) | faster (1 stage) |
| Price for small chamber < 50 m² | lower | higher (fixed costs) |
| Price for large chamber > 500 m² | higher (more labour) | lower |
| Custom shape capability | easy (cut boards) | difficult (1000/1140 mm panels) |
| HACCP compliance | requires lining | built into the panel |
